Each place added its own spices and ways to make it taste just right for them .
On top of tasting good , this dish gives you a lot of nutrients . Cаbbage is a vegеtable loaded with vitamin C and K , plus antioxidants . Pоtatoes bring carbs and fiber , and sausage adds prоtein . You can change it up by using what’s in season or what you like best . Whether it’s dinner on a cold night or part of a holiday meal , this one-pot recipe always feels like a warm hug .
Ingredients List
Here’s what you’ll need to make this dish:
- Cаbbage: Pick green , red , or Savoy for different textures and tastes .
- Sаusage: Sweet Italian , bratwurst , or kielbasa all work well . Choose your favorite .
- Pоtatoes: Yukon Gold or red potatoes are best for a creamy bite .
- Optional extras: Onions , garlic , bell peppers or spices like caraway seeds for extra flavor .
Tip : Farmers markets usually have the freshest veggies . If you can , grab organic for better taste and more nutrients .

Preparation Tips
Choosing the right cаbbage matters . Green cabbage is crisp and a bit sweet , red cabbage gives color and stronger taste , and Savoy has soft leaves that cook down fast .
For pоtatoes , think how you’ll cook them . Yukon Gold mash up smooth , and red potatoes stay firm even when you stir . If you roast them , give each piece some room so they brown evenly .
Pick your sausage by what you like . Italian sausage is sweet and herby , bratwurst is lightly spiced , and kielbasa brings a smoky note .
Prep makes cooking faster . Chop the cаbbage into bite-size bits , slice the sausage so it cooks quick , and cube potatoes in about the same size . This way everything finishes together and tastes balanced .
Cooking Directions
First , make sure all veggies and meat are chopped and ready .
- Heat oil : In a big pot or Dutch oven , warm the olive oil over medium heat until it shimmers .
- Sauté sausage : Add the sliced sausage and cook until it’s nicely browned , about 5–7 minutes . This gives your dish a tasty base .
- Cook onions & garlic : If you’re using them , toss in onions and garlic once sausage is brown . Stir for 2–3 minutes until soft .
- Add potatoes : Put in the cubed potatoes and stir so they mix with the sausage and aromatics .
- Stir in cаbbage : Gradually add the cаbbage and mix until it just starts to wilt . It will release moisture as it cooks .
- Season : Sprinkle salt , pepper , and any spices you like over the top .
- Simmer : Cover the pot , lower heat to low , and cook for 30–35 minutes . Stir now and then so nothing sticks .
- Finish & serve : When everything is tender , taste and tweak the seasoning before you dish it out .
If you want to try another method , use a slow cooker or oven . For a slow cooker , brown the sausage and veggies first then let them cook together on low for a few hours . In the oven , combine all ingredients in a covered Dutch oven and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about an hour .
