In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until all ingredients are well incorporated, but avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and shape each part into a patty, approximately ¾ inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up while cooking.
Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
Place the patties in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they do not touch each other. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
Cook the patties for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness; the internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C).
If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.
Remove the patties from the air fryer and let them rest for a couple of minutes.
Assemble your burgers on the buns with your favorite toppings.
