- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ½ cup unsalted butter Chilled and cubed.
- ¾ cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon melted butter For brushing on top.
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease lightly.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined.
Add the chilled, cubed unsalted butter to the bowl. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Pour in the buttermilk and stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough should be slightly sticky.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Gently knead the dough a few times to bring it together.
Roll out the dough to about 1-inch thick. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out round biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Brush the tops of the biscuits with melted butter.
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and serve warm.
For extra flavor, consider adding herbs, cheese, or garlic powder to the dough.
These biscuits are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat to restore their flakiness.
