Equipment

  • 1 large skillet
  • 1 wooden spoon or spatula
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 knife and cutting board
  • 1 baking tray
  • 1 oven

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • ½ cup green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • 4 slices cheese (optional)
  • Butter for spreading on toast

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Drain excess fat if needed, then add diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • While the meat mixture is simmering, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Place the slices of Texas toast on a baking tray and spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice. Optionally, place a slice of cheese on half of the slices.
  • Bake the Texas toast for 5-7 minutes or until golden and crispy.
  • Once the meat mixture is ready and the toast is browned, assemble your Sloppy Joes by spooning the meat mixture onto the unbuttered side of the Texas toast slices (with cheese, if using) and topping with another slice (buttered side up).
  • Serve warm, and enjoy your Texas Toast Sloppy Joes!

Notes

You can customize the toppings by adding pickles, diced jalapeños, or coleslaw.
This recipe can be easily doubled if you're serving a larger group.
For a lighter version, consider using lean ground turkey and reducing the ketchup.
